Our party consists of Major General Bruce, Major Teesdale, Lt. Col: Keppel, Honble R. Meade (second son of Lord Clanwilliam) & Dr. Minter R.N. Surgeon to the “Yacht.”* We left London, by the 8.30. Train in the evening for Dover. Ernest & Marie Leiningen came with us, & are going as far as Mayence. Crossed over to Calais at 11 the same evening in the “Vivid,” had a good passage, & started immediately by the 1.30. Train for Cologne. We had a very comfortable French coupeé & slept well through the night. Leopold Brabant & Philip Flanders met us a[t] Malines & we travelled together as far as Verviers when they left us. We found it awfully cold at Verviers, & it was a great change after the mild weather we had been having in England. At Cologne
